This is the cover of a brochure I designed for the Coeur d'Alene Resort back in Idaho. The Boardwalk Marina rents out some of the nicest boats in the world, so in an attempt to share that experience with more companies coming to Coeur d'Alene, they offer a Poker Run. I moved to Oregon before they finished the project, and so I'm not sure if they ever used the brochure design.

New Portfolio
I'm experimenting with WordPress again to see if I can create a better online portfolio than the Flash site I originally developed. So far, not much is online; I'm working on it, though. It will include News Design, Graphic Design, Photography, Writing, Multimedia as well as my Resume and Blog, among other things.
You can still see the Flash site by clicking on the image below:

January/February Booster Club Newsletter
This was the cover for last month's Booster Club newsletter. I'm lucky that North Idaho College still lets me create these even though I've moved to Portland.
The main concept stemmed from the fact that all three winter sports teams were ranked in the national polls. The spotlight was shown on North Idaho in the map behind everything.

High School Basketball Tournament
This is the second year I was able to produce the Holiday Inn High School Basketball Tournament held at North Idaho College. I had always wanted to produce a program with this sort of theme, and I was really excited the way it came out:
This was the cover.
This was the schedule page just after the Table of Contents. I also used a version of this for the promotional posters that were printed and used at the high schools who were playing.
This is just one of the spreads that showcased all the team rosters.

WINNER: Best of Collegiate Design
So the one year I clean up and snag a chunk of awards from the College Media Advisors’ annual design competition, Best of Collegiate Design, they stop publishing the book of winners.
But of course.
After 16 years of printing this damn publication, they stop when I make it. Supposedly, instead of the book they normally give away, all the winners receive a certificate. How cute.
However, they did make a slideshow that showcases all the winners. And that’s OK, because they only reason I ever liked the book was to see what other colleges are doing. I love flipping through and getting ideas and see who’s used some of mine.
Oh well, at least I won this year. And by that, I mean I made it into the book. And by that, I mean I made it five times! With close to 1300 entries from almost 80 colleges and universities, I’m pretty stoked to say the least.
So all is well in the land of Jakewood –- at least for now.
Here are the awards I won and the pages with them. By far the greatest success in my collegiate career concerning all things design is winning first place in the nameplate category. I spent more than a year designing the template for The Sentinel’s current nameplate, so winning that was huge for me.

October Booster Club Newsletter
I wish I had more time to work on this issue, but we had to get it out quick. While I wanted to spend much, much more time on the cover and design a time-line of sorts, chronicling the history of NIC's wrestling program up until win No. 600, I only had an hour or so to come up with this:
I went a little cliche on the headline ("Glory Road"), but with all due respect, that pretty much sums up the history of NIC's luminous wrestling program.
Winning 600 matches and 13 National Championships is indeed a dominant feat!

Award Finalist
UPDATE (10/31): I was named second place in the competition!! To see the winners and read more, check out my other blog, Jakewood, or read about the competition here and full list of competitors at the ACP website.
I was just named a finalist for the Associated Collegiate Press's Best Front Page Design against every college in America. (See the other finalists here).
This is a huge honor to even be named a finalist, so winning would just be icing on the cake. Of course, the winners won't be announced until Oct. 31 at the ACP convention in Austin, Tex.
Here is the page that is a finalist (it's the same page that the Student Society of News Designers named non-daily Page 1 winner).

Other Portfolios
I've been recently learning how to design a Flash website, although until I am able to finish creating it exactly the way I wish, I also used an online free Flash generator: Wix.com. My first attempt can be seen here.
What's more, I am still waiting for a place to host the Flash site and associated Pelican video documentary I created at the Poynter Institute last May (see some of my Pelican photos here).
Nevertheless, I also will be launching a photography portfolio in the near future. The interim site can be viewed here for now, and while I haven't uploaded many, many more will be popping up soon as I have time to edit them.
